The hands-free card is among of the most important inventions to ever change the way that people use cars. Pascaline, Head Cross-Cutting Products for Renault Group Products talks us through the background and development of the device.

The origins of the card

The hands-free card from Renault is a global success. It has become an integral element of the daily lives of car owners. Since its first introduction 20 years ago, it is one of the top innovations from the company. Pascaline the Head of Cross-Cutting Products at the Products division, takes us on journey to learn the story of this handy accessory.

It was in 2001 that the Laguna II, a saloon that was designed to reflect a lifestyle driving, came into production. It was a time of tremendous innovation, featuring a host of new equipment attributes that enabled customers to enjoy the full benefits of their vehicle.

The occupants were still required to use the keys to open and shut their doors. This was a real obstacle for many and Renault engineers were determined to address the issue.

As a result, they decided to put a contactless keycard in their vehicles. They also developed an system that would allow motorists to open and start their vehicles by simply waving hands. The card key is now found in two out of three Renault vehicles. If it's located in the ignition barrel or in the centre console the car will open when the card is in close proximity and close automatically when it's moved away. This is a genuine Renault remote control card (without blade). It is supplied individually clam packed and is ready to be programmed with Abrites diagnostics for Renault/ Dacia software with the ProTAG programmer.

The design

A Renault key card, or even an auto remote key can be a fantastic convenience in our lives. Unfortunately, these products are prone to malfunction due to wear and tear or dropping. When this occurs, it can be extremely frustrating. There are, however, several ways to replace your Renault key card. Contacting your dealership is one option. It can take a long time and may be costly. Another option is to contact a professional locksmith.

This product is compatible with the Renault Laguna II, Espace 4 and Vel Satis keycards (keyless entry system). It will protect your card and gives it a nice appearance. It comes in two colors and can be printed with your VIN, logo or any other information. It can be tucked away in a key case or used with a standard keychain. This is a genuine Renault part that will only fit the vehicle ordered. Please provide your VIN to ensure that the correct key is provided.

The technology

Renault key cards have transponder chips and a low-frequency communication feature. This allows the card to talk to your car. These chips are prone to cracking due the use of common sense and it can be very expensive to get them repaired or replaced by a dealer. We can repair or replace your Renault key card for less than the dealer cost.

The hands-free card was first launched in 2001 on the Laguna II saloon, which was designed to embody the "lifestyle" car of the 21st century. Renault was unable to test all possible uses, despite having a detailed design guideline which was based on more than 6,000 conversations with customers.

Fortunately, the product manager on Laguna II, Bernard Dumondel was in a hotel at the time. He was using his room key to open his car. Seeing that the key had the small magnetic strip he thought that it would be possible to create an auto key that operated similarly.

In the years to come, the card was hailed an invention that revolutionized the world and is now present on two out of three Renault vehicles. While smartphones seem to be close to replacing it, Renault has chosen to take advantage of the new technology without having the hands-free card go off the radar.

The keyless entry system

The hands-free card from Renault was a revolutionary piece of technology when it was first introduced 20 years ago. The exterior design is the same however the technology has been improved to make it easier to use and more difficult to hack.

It's not able to be used from outside to open doors or start the car until the driver is able to activate it. The reason is that the radio signal antennas "around" the car are configured to detect whether the key is located outside or inside the car. The key will continue to turn the ignition from a distance, but will not open the doors. This is for your safety.

The second thing is that the wireless remote control transmissions of the system use a rolling code. This minimizes the possibility of someone intercepting a control message and transmitting it to gain access, but it does not completely eliminate the possibility. [1]
